Hummingbird Nest

July 1, 2009 - Here at the headquarters of DataWing Software, we have been treated to a once-in-a-lifetime real-life nature show. An Anna's Hummingbird female made a nest in the courtyard of our building, and laid the first of two eggs on May 17th. We've enjoyed close-up views of nest-building (using spider silk, lichens, plant down, etc.), the appearance of two jelly-bean-sized eggs, the hatching of the eggs, and the amazing development of the two chicks.

In honor of Anna, we have made her the DataWing Bird of the Month for July 2009.

6/24/09 There's not enough room in this nest for both of us!

6/24/09 1st chick is spending a lot of time sitting on the edge of the nest and trying out its wings

6/25/09 All alone - 1st chick fledged early yesterday evening

6/25/09 Out of the next, but still hanging around

6/26/09 1st chick and Mom

6/26/09 Note that chick has white neck and a little orange left on the bill. Mom as some dark on the neck (red in sunlight). Adult male would have solid red neck and head.

6/26/09 Might still need some feeding from Mom! Mom fed the chicks for about a week after they left the nest.

6/26/09 On the morning after chick #2 fledged, an egg appeared in a new nest the mom had been building.
